| 2011-07-28 Iain M... | "Satan on the throne of God" can be the only way to describe the chilling climax of the third movement, followed by the dove of peace restoring calm to the world. Very rarely can one sense so much anger in a performance, and so much total commitment - Furtwängler was at his finest in pieces like this, and no doubt this performance, apparently with Hitler himself in the audience, shows his inner feelings like no other. This is surely the finest performance of this symphony ever committed to tape (the early magnetic tape has a surprisingly wide dynamic range), and is an essential part of any collection. The best restoration, however, is from Andrew Rose at Pristine Classical, though this one is very fine. |
